The fourth quarter isn’t the end of the year. It’s the beginning of the next one.
There’s something about January that makes us want to start fresh. We set new goals, make new plans, create new systems, and recommit to all the things we’ve been meaning to do. But in real estate, waiting until January to think about next year can mean starting several steps behind. The relationships, conversations, and habits that create business in January often begin months earlier.
That’s why I think September is one of the most valuable times of year to take a closer look at your business. The pace begins to shift, the spring rush is behind us, and while there’s still plenty of business happening, there’s also an opportunity to look up from the day-to-day and think about the bigger picture. What worked this year? What felt harder than it needed to? Where did your business come from? Which relationships deserve more attention? And perhaps most importantly, what do you want next year to feel like?
That last question matters because planning isn’t only about setting a production goal. Maybe you want more repeat and referral business. Maybe you want stronger systems so every transaction doesn’t feel like starting from scratch. You may want to become more consistent with marketing, protect more of your personal time, or simply make your business feel more intentional than it did this year. Those are all worthwhile goals, and none of them require waiting until January 1.
September gives you time to start making changes without the pressure of reinventing everything at once. You can improve a system, reconnect with past clients, start the marketing habit you’ve been putting off, or have conversations you know you need to have. By the time January arrives, you’re not trying to become a different agent overnight. You’ve already started building the business you want to carry into the new year.
Planning early also gives you something that can be difficult to find when you’re busy: perspective. When we only measure our businesses by transactions, it’s easy to overlook the progress happening underneath the numbers. Maybe your confidence grew this year. Maybe your systems improved. Maybe you handled a difficult transaction differently than you would have a year ago, or built stronger relationships with the people you serve. Those things matter too.
A successful year isn’t just something you finish. It’s something you learn from. Taking the time now to recognize what worked, what didn’t, and what you want to do differently gives you the opportunity to head into the next year with a little more clarity and a lot less pressure to suddenly have everything figured out on January 1.
A Note From Our Broker
I’ve never loved the idea that January has to be some dramatic reset. The businesses we’re proud of usually aren’t created by one burst of motivation at the beginning of the year. They’re built through small, intentional decisions made throughout it.
That’s why I encourage agents to use the final months of the year differently. Celebrate what worked, be honest about what didn’t, and think about what you want more of in your business and what you’re ready to leave behind. Then start making those small changes now.
My goal isn’t for agents to enter January with a longer list of resolutions. It’s for them to enter it with clarity, momentum, and a business that already feels like it’s moving in the right direction.
